The historical fortress of Terezin located 50km northwest from Prague was established by Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia Josef II in 1780. It was built as a part of the monarchy’s fort system on a very strategic location at the confluence of rivers Ohre and Labe, predominantly against the Prussian army. At that time, the fort of Terezin was considered as a masterpiece of the fortification design and most modern in whole Austro-Hungarian Empire, however, due to the fast development of military strategies and signing the piece with Germans hundred years later, it was never used for military purposes. In the 20th century it served as a political prison, where Gavrilo Princip was imprisoned after his conviction for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on June 28th, 1914, what triggered off the World War I. During the Nazi occupation between 1939-1945, Terezin became a headquarter of Gestapo Police and also concentration camp, where many people – mostly Jewish, found their end.
